Chapter 8
In spite of the previous eveningâs activities, John continued to treat Becky professionally. In fact, she often wondered if the man sheâd seen outside of work was really the same one she worked with on a daily basis. Though they often spoke during the day, his tone remained businesslike without any tinge of the desire heâd allowed to creep in during their nighttime encounters. She doubted anyone else even suspected they had more than a friendly relationship.
As she stood, lost in reflection, waiting for her tea to steep during a break on Friday, Debra, a secretary in the film management department, wandered in and took a yogurt from the refrigerator. The rail-thin brunette with a year-round tan turned with a catty smile on her face, startling Becky from her thoughts. âYou and Dr. Grant get along really well, donât you?â Her lips curved beneath their coat of lipstick. âIâd almost think youâd known each other a long time.â
Becky sucked in a startled breath and fought not to choke on the cloud of perfume Debra carried with her. She pretended to look through her notes from the day, her attitude as unconcerned as possible. âI wouldnât say we get along that well.â She wondered what Debra suspected was going on and proceeded to lie through her teeth. âI mean, all we ever discuss is work. Itâs a very intense assignment, though. John has been very good about meeting with me to tell me what I need to know about the ER, so I can keep up with the blog.â
Debra continued looking at Becky after she stopped speaking, her expression thoughtful as she stirred her yogurt, and Becky realized sheâd probably protested too much. Deciding she couldnât help matters with further explanation, Becky turned back to her notes. She understood the problem: John was considered an extremely eligible bachelor by a certain faction of the women who worked with him. They saw Beckyâs friendship with him as a threat, something that might take their prize off the market, though she felt certain not one of them was of the right caliber to ever be able to capture John Grantâs heart.
She jumped when a hand rested on her shoulder and looked up to find John, his eyebrows raised, studying her. âPizza tonight?â he inquired.
She hesitated, then nodded, acutely aware of Debraâs glare.
He grinned. âYou bring the beer.â
As he turned to go, Debra sidled up to him, one long, red fingernail playing with the rim of her yogurt cup. Becky was amused to see him take a half step back.
âYou never invite me over for pizza, John.â Debra pouted, putting her full lips to good use. âAnd weâve been friends for years.â
Becky hid a slight smile. She could tell John was uncomfortable. He even glanced Beckyâs way for help, but as she was already on Debraâs bad side, Becky decided sheâd better stay out of it. Besides, chances were heâd gotten himself into it by flirting a little too much at some point.
He made Becky pay for her recalcitrance, though.
